How to track opened emails and clicked links in merged emails?

This article describes how to track which merged emails were opened and which links were clicked. It also describes how many times an email was opened or a link was clicked. This is Gmail tracking at its best. It is free, simple, yet a powerful email tracker.

NOTE:  The following instructions are for Google Docs, however, the same instructions also apply to email tracking using Google Slides, Google Sheets, or Google Forms.

Email tracking setup

Step 1: Open Email Tracking dialog box

Click on Extensions > Mail Merge > Email Tracking & Unsubscribe to open the Email Tracking dialog box.

Step 2: Track opened emails

To track opened emails, select Yes from the Track Opened Emails drop-down menu.

Step 3: Track clicked links

To track clicked links, select Yes from the Track Clicked Links drop-down menu.

Step 4: Click Save

Click on Save to apply the changes.

Tracking of opened emails and clicked links is now possible for merged emails from that particular Google Doc. If you are creating a new Google Doc, you need to enable these email tracking features again.

Monitoring email tracking

Step 1: Open Email Tracking dialog box

Click on Extensions > Mail Merge > Email Tracking & Unsubscribe to open the Email Tracking dialog box.

Step 2: Open GTrack Dashboard

Click on Dashboard to open the GTrack Dashboard that displays the Opened Emails Report.

The following Information related to opened emails is displayed in the Opened Emails Report:

NOTE: Emails that were not opened do not appear here.

Step 3: Open Times Opened dialog box

For each opened email, click on the link in the Last Opened column to open the Times Opened dialog box that displays how many times an email was opened.

The date and time of each instance when an email was opened is displayed.

NOTE: Email records are deleted automatically after two months.

For each opened email, click on the link in the Last Opened column to open the Times Opened dialog box that displays how many times an email was opened.

Step 4: Open Email Links Clicked dialog box

For each opened email, click on the number in the Links column to open the Email Links Clicked dialog box that displays whether links in an email were clicked.

For example, the link in your email is displayed with either the date and time the link was clicked or the text Not clicked.
